Frequently-asked questions about course content
1. How does Readak complement our faculty's efforts?
The Readak teaching staff is specially trained to meet the needs of students of all levels
and abilities. Schools that provide reading instruction will find that the Readak course
complements that effort and indicates to parents how important reading and study skills
are for success. In addition to using the course workbook, students will use their own
textbooks in class, applying the skills to regular schoolwork.
2. What is a Readak class like?
In many ways the Readak class will be similar to a school's regular classes. There will be
a review of the last class and a discussion concerning the use of techniques learned. New
material, such as the HEART study method, or ways to reduce mind-wandering and take notes,
will be presented and practiced. Timed readings, comprehensive reviews, class discussions,
and drills will be utilized until students are comfortable with the new skills.
For more information on what goes on in the Readak classroom, please see the Readak Course Outline.
3. Can Readak guarantee that a student will read better?
No, not any more than any teacher can guarantee that any student will learn a particular
subject. Students can expect improvement if they apply the Readak skills they learn. The
vast majority of the several thousand students we teach each year improve their
comprehension and reading rates while acquiring better study habits.
4. How will Readak help those who are already good readers?
This course is not just for slow or below-average readers; nor is it speed reading. Some
of the greatest improvements are made by students who are already reading above their
grade level. Good students become better when they acquire and apply the techniques and
methods taught in the Readak course.
5. How much homework does this course involve?
Absolutely none. Direct application of classroom techniques is made to homework or leisure
reading, but there is no work assigned to be done outside of class. We will instruct
students in the application of reading and study skills to their content area textbooks
and to specific assignments.
